CONAKRY, Guinea — At least 30 people have been killed after a massive mound of waste collapsed at a landfill in Guinea’s capital, Conakry.

The disaster occurred at the Dar-es-Salam landfill after heavy rainfall triggered a landslide, burying nearby homes and makeshift structures.

At least 22 people were injured, including six who were seriously hurt, according to reports. Rescue teams have been searching the site for survivors and additional victims.

Authorities had reportedly issued evacuation orders to people living near the landfill because of concerns over the site’s safety.

The collapse has renewed concerns about waste management, urban planning and the dangers faced by communities living close to large open-air dumps.

Emergency workers, security personnel and medical teams have been deployed to support the rescue and recovery operation.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the death toll could rise as search operations continue.

PR Times Africa will continue to monitor the rescue operation and official updates from Guinea.
